Chicago's Hospitals Are Closing.
47,000 Patients Need a Plan.
4 hospitals closed in 2 years. 47,000+ patients displaced. Remaining ERs overwhelmed. Build the navigation system that gets patients where they need to go.
The Challenge
Your Mission
Chicago is in a hospital closure crisis. 4 hospitals have closed in the last 2 years — mostly on the South and West sides. Over 47,000 patients have been displaced, forced to find new providers, navigate unfamiliar systems, and travel farther for care.
Emergency rooms at remaining hospitals are overwhelmed. Community clinics are at capacity. Patients with chronic conditions are falling through the cracks. The communities hit hardest are the ones that were already underserved.
You're building the patient navigation system.
Design a solution that helps displaced patients find the right care — whether that's a new primary care provider, an FQHC, an urgent care, or a specialty clinic. Make it work for real people in real neighborhoods.
There are three roles. Pick one:
Pick Your Role
Three Tracks
The Architect
Build the Navigation Tool
Build a working patient navigation tool. A clinic finder, a triage dashboard, a routing app, a provider matcher — whatever helps displaced patients find care fast.
The Oracle
Analyze & Model Capacity
Analyze the displacement data. Model which clinics can absorb patients, where the gaps are, and what breaks first. Build the data case for where resources should go.
The Muse
Build Community Trust
Build the outreach campaign that reaches displaced patients and rebuilds trust. These communities just lost their hospital — they need to believe the system still works for them.
How You're Scored
Five Dimensions — Same for Every Track
| Dimension | What They're Evaluating |
|---|---|
| Problem Understanding | Did you actually understand the crisis? Do you know who the displaced patients are? |
| Solution Quality | Is it good? Would it work? Is the thinking sound? |
| Presentation & Polish | Well-built and clearly presented? Can judges interact with it? |
| Adaptability | How did you respond to the curveball? Rethink or bolt-on? |
| AI Mastery | Did you direct AI creatively? Evidence of iteration? |
Each dimension scored 1–5 by each judge. Total /25 × 4 = /100.

Breaking: Emergency Hospital Closure
Everything just changed.
St. Mary's Hospital just announced emergency closure effective immediately. 12,000 patients need rerouting. Three nearby clinics are already at 95% capacity.
The patients include 2,400 with chronic conditions requiring ongoing care, 800 prenatal patients, and 3,100 elderly patients who relied on St. Mary's ER as their primary care access point.
The supply alert API has been updated. You have until 2:30 PM.
